Education

The Professorship in Forest Ecology, Forestry and timber Utilization was established at the Institute for Landscape Ecology to provide an insight into the problems and chances of sustainable forestry. 1.500 students of geosciences ((link)) are having the possibility to study the theory of forest ecology, forestry and timber utilization before they gain practical experience in the woods, our `outdoor-labs". By interdisciplinary education we are trying to gain mutual acceptance for opposing claims lain on woods and forests by ecological pressure groups, tourists, land owners as well as the forest and timber industry.

The introductory classes for students enrolled in landscape ecology include 10 theoretical and 4 supplementary practical classes semester periods per week covering forest ecology, forestry and timber utilization. In the winter semester 2008/2009 there´s an additional course called "Methods of surveying and mapping woods and other landscapes". Advanced students (generally Master students) can additionally apply for one of the student projects (8 semester periods per week, compulsory optional subject) which will be "Compensatory habitat creation" in winter semester 2008/2009.

In further seminars, colloquia and field trips student have the opportunity to enhance their knowledge. Excursions such as a three-week trip to Canada or a one-week excursion to the Bavarian Forest National Park are offered at irregular intervals. News concerning field-trips will be announced on our German website.

We would like to excuse the inconvenience further information is only available in the German version. If you would like to know more about our work, please do not hesitate to contact Susanne Bergmann. She will be able to answer your questions in English.
